U.S. citizens enjoy a full measure of every kind of freedom. So it’s something of a paradox that our great nation also leads the world in incarceration. The U.S. has more human beings behind bars than any other nation on earth, and by a wide margin — four times the world average. The United States imprisons more of its citizens than Russia under communism or South Africa under apartheid.

Civilization as we know it is unsustainable without an adequate supply of energy and water. Even so, desalinization — the process of taking the various salts out of seawater that make it drinkable — isn’t something you’re hearing anything about. You should be, though, and you will. In fact, the issue likely will come to the forefront in mid-December during the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The availability of fresh water will be the next big environmental push. Here’s why… The government usually doesn’t make things easy. Take tax forms. Or consider the Postal Service. But rules were made to be broken. Washington’s latest pronouncement is turning the difficult task of making money in a recession into a walk in the park — at least for one company. We all know that Congress is only too happy to “invest” our money. But how are they when it comes to managing their own? Not so great, as it turns out.
